This month Earthscape highlights conferences addressing climate change and sustainable development. The United Nations held its thirteenth annual Climate Change Conference in Bali from December 3 to 14, 2007, with sessions on the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Kyoto Protocol. The Earth Institute at Columbia University convened its fifth biennial State of the Planet Conference in New York City on March 27 and 28, 2008. The conference covered sustainable development issues including poverty eradication, natural resources and conflict, global public health, energy solutions for the future, and climate change in the Arctic.

We have also updated our collection of publications from the Environmental Change and Security Program of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. The program explores the impact of environmental degradation, resource scarcity, population pressures, and public health on conflict and foreign policy.
